Two things: 1) we both have the same WP theme, which I think makes us blog soulmates, or something.

2) Linguistics is the Bomb. No seriously: before I went back to school for nursing I got a degree in Speech-Path but had no desire to actually become a Speech Pathologist. But I loved the sheer weirdness of language (particularly psycholinguistics) sooooo much I planned on moving onto Linguistics instead of pursuing speech. The only program I got into, though, was a Speech & Hearing Sciences program. Armed with only a bachelor's degree and a full time job, it became clear after the first year that I'd never make it. I wasn't ready and I didn't Also, speech sciences can be BORING! I had some fab professors, though, who are still my speechy heros.

I still geek out hardcore over speech and language.
